Hyperfly Rash Guard & Flygirl Spats Review + Size Info

When it comes to no-gi BJJ training gear, this is what I’m looking for: leggings or spats that won’t sag and aren’t see through, and a rash guard that will stay put without rolling up that isn’t so tight it makes me feel like a stuffed sausage. Usually I make do with normal leggings and fitted exercise tees from Amazon, but when Hyperfly reached out and asked me if I would like to try out their Flygirl line, I said, “Sure, why not?” So, this is my honest review of my Flygirl compression shorts, Flygirl HyperCross BJJ leggings, and CyberFly rash guard.

Review of Hyperfly’s BJJ Leggings / Spats

My first thought when I put on the Flygirl HyperCross BJJ Leggings was, “These are the most comfortable athletic leggings I’ve ever worn and I never want to take them off.” They fit me like a glove, and were high-waisted and supportive without digging into my waist. Unlike most athletic leggings, they do not have pockets, making them legal to wear for a Jiu Jitsu competition.

Details About the Leggings

These are well-made, quality women’s leggings available in multiple colors. They are high-waisted: the waistband sits just above my belly button. They are not see-through when you bend. I wear cotton underwear under my leggings, and I was not able to easily see a panty line. For those who prefer to go Commando, you will appreciate that the crotch is constructed with a very long gusset that runs almost to the knees on both sides so there’s no “intersection” of fabric. Here is a picture to show what I mean:

Are Hyperfly Spats True to Size?

These leggings seem to run one size small. I am 5’6″ tall and weigh 147 pounds. I normally wear Size Large in leggings, and according to the Hyperfly size chart Large would be my size based on my body measurements, but I ordered size XL on the recommendation of a Hyperfly representative who helped me decide which sizes to order, and the XL ended up fitting me perfectly.

Since the largest size offered by Hyperfly is XXL, that means they really don’t offer any plus sized leggings. It also means if you are short these leggings may be too long for you. The exact length is 37″. Below is an image showing the approximate measurements when laid flat, without stretching the fabric.

Do Hyperfly Leggings Sag or Roll Down?

I can honestly say the HyperCross leggings performed the best of any pair of leggings I’ve ever worn for a no-gi Jiu Jitsu class, staying in place for multiple rounds of rolling without sagging, rolling, or needing to be adjusted. Even when my shirt rode up, my spats stayed in place and my back was never exposed, as you can see in this picture:

After several rounds they began to sag a bit which you can see in this picture, but I have no complaints about one or two adjustments over an hour of rolling compared with other brands that I’m constantly tugging on the entire time.

Review of the Flygirl Compression Shorts

I don’t have any pictures of me rolling in these Hyperfly Flygirl compression shorts because a) it’s winter and too cold to wear shorts, and b) I don’t like rolling in shorts–I get mat burn on my knees. However, I did wear them for a bike ride last summer, and I would say they are comparable to the leggings in terms of comfort and quality.

The fabric is the same, non-see-through material, and they fit me about the same, with the waistband coming above my belly button. The only difference I can see is that the gusset is a triangle (see below) instead of a long strip of fabric, but that makes no difference for me in how comfortable they are.

Here’s a graphic showing the measurements of the XL shorts when laid flat. Just like the leggings, these shorts fit me the way size Large normally does. I would not call these measurements extra large.

I really like the detail of the lettering across the back. I like that the letters are shiny and rubbery instead of printed on the fabric.

Hyperfly Rash Guard Review: How Does the Unisex Ranked Rash Guard Fit Women?

Lastly, let’s talk about the Cyberfly Ranked Rash Guard. Unlike the Flygirl spats and compression shorts, which both exceeded my expectations, I didn’t end up loving the Cyberfly rash guard. Like most unisex rash guards, it’s too tight for me in the waist and too loose in the chest and shoulders.

I do think it is well-made rash guard of above-average quality for someone with broad shoulders and muscular lats, but that’s not me. Below is a picture of me wearing the Size L rash guard and Size XL leggings in my closet just after I got home from a sweaty Jiu Jitsu class. The rash guard does fit me better than my XMartial rash guard I reviewed a while back, but as you can see, it’s tight in the hips but awkwardly loose in the upper chest and underarm area. In other words, made for muscles, not curves.

CyberFly Rash Guard Review: What I Like About It

Objectively speaking, this is a very nice rash guard. The fabric feels nice, I like the minimal branding, and I like the side vents under the armpits, which run halfway down the ribs. I like that the sleeves aren’t too loose and flappy but also aren’t constricting in the armpits. I’ve worn this rash guard to class several times, and I will probably continue to wear it every now and then. I would recommend it for men, or for women with a slender build and muscular upper torso.

CyberFly Rash Guard Drawbacks

If it was just how it looked on me that I disliked, I could deal with it, but the main reason I don’t love this rash guard is that it rides up while I’m rolling, whether I’m wearing it with spats or under a gi. The bottom of the shirt is supposed to be tight to hold it in place, but instead, the tight waist just means that when it does ride up, it stays up instead of falling back down on its own like the fitted workout tees I normally wear.

This rash guard does not have a band of silicone across the bottom to help hold it in place. Perhaps if they were to add that it would help. In the photos below you can see how the rash guard was riding up the entire time I was rolling. (And how the Flygirl spats saved me by not exposing my back!)

CyberFly Rash Guard Sizing

I chose size Large for this rash guard. I could have probably fit into the Medium, but I don’t like a super tight “stuffed sausage” fit for a rash guard. It’s possible if I had gone with the Medium it would have been a better overall fit for me, but it also might have made the riding up issue even worse.

Concluding Thoughts About Hyperfly’s No-Gi Gear

As a longtime fan of Hyperfly’s Starlyte Jiu Jitsu gi, I was excited to give their no-gi gear a try. The Flygirl leggings and shorts I ordered did not disappoint. They are well-made, well-fitting, and thoughtfully designed for women. Although they run small and I would recommend ordering a size up from your normal size, in my opinion, they are worth the price. The CyberFly rash guard was also well-made and high quality, but I would recommend it to men, not women. For the price, I would look instead for a BJJ rash guard that’s designed with women in mind.
