Submission Snax Energy Bites

My Honest Review of Submission Snax Energy Bites

What are Submission snax Energy Bites?

Submission Snax (SubSnax for short) are a healthy snack designed by and for Jiu Jitsu athletes to help get them through a long day of competition. If you’ve ever tried a homemade protein ball, these are kind of like that: a soft, dough-like ball about the size of a ping pong ball designed to be a quick, healthy snack. Only unlike protein balls, these don’t have much protein (just 1 gram)…they are literally just meant to give you some energy for Jiu Jitsu and hold you over until your next meal.

Update: They’ve now introduced a new flavor, Acai and Honey, that contains 4 grams of protein.

Do SubSnax Energy Bites taste good?

“Healthy” snacks are often lacking in taste, but not these! When I took my first bite of the Chocolatey Cacao flavored energy bite, I was so surprised by how good it tasted that I thought, “Do these have sugar in them?” and quickly picked up the package to check the ingredients. No added sugar–the only sweetener is real dates!

When I shared SubSnax with some of my friends at Jiu Jitsu class, they all preferred the Vanilla Almond flavor, but I like the Chocolatey Cacao flavor the best.

Here are some of my friends’ reactions when they took their first bite:

“It’s good! It didn’t taste anything like what I thought it was gonna taste like.”

“Oh, this one’s yummy too! 10 out of 10!”

“I’m surprised because I think I like [the Vanilla Almond one] better.”

“I’m such a hater, I really thought I was gonna hate these…but it’s good!”

What Does the Acai and Honey Flavor Taste Like?

After I originally published this review, the founders sent me this new flavor to try as a thank-you. I was a little skeptical of the acai flavor because I don’t like berry flavored things, but these don’t actually taste like berries at all. It’s hard to describe what they do taste like. The primary ingredients are dates, honey, and brown rice protein, and they taste like a combination of those ingredients, but not strongly like any of those individual ingredients.

What are the ingredients in Submission Snax?

Submission Snax contain only organic, whole food ingredients. Here are the ingredients for each of their flavors:

Chocolatey Cacao: dates, coconut, and cacao powder.

Vanilla Almond: dates, coconut, almonds, sprouted rolled oats, and vanilla bean powder.

Acai & Honey: dates, brown rice protein, raisins, acai juice powder, macadamia nuts, raw honey, and vanilla bean powder.

Are Submission Snax Vegan / Gluten Free / Sugar Free / etc.?

Submission Snax contain only plant-based ingredients that are naturally gluten free, but as far as I can tell they are not certified gluten free. They contain no added sugars; the sugar in them comes from dates. They are not keto-friendly since they do contain carbohydrates from natural sugar.

Are They healthy?

Submission Snax are a much healthier alternative to most of the snacks typically available for purchase at a Jiu Jitsu tournament, and the real food ingredients include fiber and other nutrients so you’re not just eating empty calories.

Not Just for Jiu Jitsu Tournaments

Even though Submission Snax were created as a snack to take to Jiu Jitsu tournaments, I like them as a light snack to eat before a regular Jiu Jitsu class when I need to eat something to get me through the class but don’t want a heavy meal. I’ve also enjoyed them as a late night snack while watching TV when I’m craving a sweet treat but don’t want to eat something too high in calories before bed.

If you’re looking for a fun gift idea for someone who does Jiu Jitsu, these would make a great stocking stuffer or addition to a Jiu Jitsu-themed gift basket.

Do Submission Snax actually give you energy?

I can’t say I noticed having more energy after eating one of these energy bites, but I also wasn’t feeling particularly low in energy when I tried them. I did feel less hungry, though, which is what I really want from a snack! Even though they’re small, they are “substantial” enough to make you feel like you ate real food, unlike most of the snacks sold at a concession stand.

Where can you buy Submission snax Energy Bites?

You can order SubSnax energy bites from the Submission Snax website. The company also sets up a booth and sells them at Jiu Jitsu tournaments; check their schedule (listed on their home page) to find out if they’ll be at a tournament in your area.
